Real Solutions for Burnaby's Housing Market
The cost of real estate has risen to the point that the average Burnaby resident can't afford to purchase real estate without making substantial sacrifices.
The City of Burnaby needs to offer more flexibility and less red tape in its residential zoning practices, and offer incentives to build family friendly missing middle structures (3+ bedrooms) such as multiplex complexes, co-op housing, stacked apartments, legally built secondary suites and laneway houses with sufficient parking.
An independent office should be created that deals with Tenant Assistance Program inquiries and other rental issues in Burnaby. This office must remain free of property developer influence, and should advocate for the renters across this municipality.
The City of Burnaby needs to immediately address parking issues in neighbourhoods all over the city that are generating a great deal of animosity among its residents.
Better Delivery of City Services
The City of Burnaby needs to be more thorough and efficient when responding to issues with city infrastructure. All city staff need to take a more active role in helping make Burnaby a cleaner community while on shift.
The City of Burnaby needs to hire more bylaw enforcement officers in order to better serve Burnaby residents. Currently, any bylaw infringements (parking, noise, etc) reported after 8:00 pm have to be investigated by other parties such as the RCMP.
Burnaby needs to look at other Metro Vancouver municipalities and adopt best practices when it comes to gathering information to resolve issues and providing timely feedback to residents who report those issues.
Make Burnaby the Cleanest Municipality in the Lower Mainland
Burnaby has many beautiful parks and has worked hard to integrate green space all through the community. So why are we allowing litter to fester throughout the municipality?
Burnaby covers a staggering 98.6 square kilometers, and citizens from all over this community need to work together to remove litter from our streets, store fronts and parks once and for all, and then keep it that way. I started the Clean Up Burnaby Campaign to show that civic pride still exists in this great city. If we all work together in a cooperative manner, we can achieve great things and make Burnaby the most desirable place to live and work in the Lower Mainland.
Burnaby will lead the Lower Mainland when it comes to community cleanliness through citizen involvement and investments in staffing and specialized equipment that will aid in excellent litter pickup capabilities.
Safe, Clean and Accessible Playgrounds and Parks
The City of Burnaby needs to do a better job in making sure all parks and playgrounds are accessible, well maintained, and clean. These parks should also be free of invasive plant species such as Himalayan blackberry, English Ivy and giant knotweed, and have native plant species in their place that will encourage pollination by bees and other insect species. Most Burnaby parks should have sufficient tree canopy cover to provide shade during hot summer months.
The city should create a QR code triggered program that will tell the stories of the people and geographic features that have shaped and grown Burnaby over the past 200 years.
Transition Towards Green Energy Solutions
The City of Burnaby needs to invest in a robust, efficient and safe network of mobility (bike) lanes. With gas prices at an all time high, now is the time to start encouraging Burnaby residents and commuters to park their vehicles and get a little exercise while reducing their carbon footprint.
The City of Burnaby needs to work more aggressively towards replacing its vehicle fleet with hybrid and EV technology. Fossil fuels that use fracking for extraction such as natural gas and LNG must be eliminated from the vehicle fleet in order to pivot towards environmentally responsible fuel sources.
Burnaby needs to lead the way in making sure that new building developments include incentives to encourage green energy power generation, encouraging usage of heat pumps and electric appliances, and reduce its overall carbon footprint by using building materials other than concrete.
